You’ll know the front drive shaft is due for replacement when you start to hear clicking or clunking noises from the front end, especially when turning or accelerating.

Vibration through the steering wheel or front floor area is another common sign, often caused by wear in the CV joints. Grease leaking from a torn CV boot usually leads to rapid joint wear and should be checked straight away.

If there is noticeable play when the shaft is moved by hand, or if the vehicle struggles to engage or maintain 4WD properly, the drive shaft may have reached the end of its service life. Any knocking under load or rough operation when the suspension articulates is a clear indication it’s time to fit a replacement.
